For the past few years, the High School Sunday School class covered the same Bible lessons as the rest of St. Paul’s Sunday School, albeit from an approach more appropriate for teenagers. This year the class has decided to go in a different direction. Instead of focusing on specific stories from the Bible, the class wanted to focus on issues facing young adults (such as faith challenges, stewardship, and living a Christian lifestyle) and to learn about different world religions (such as Islam, Scientology, and Mormonism). As such, students are beginning to learn how to use the Bible as a tool to find answers to everyday issues.

Since this is a new direction for the Youth Bible Class, there is a lot of experimentation going on: different lesson series are being tried out, different overarching themes are being looked into, and the students as a class help determine which way the class will go. Additionally, many of the questions poised to the students are generally more open-ended, with no “correct” answer (e.g., “What comes to mind when you hear the word guru?”).

Another change to the class was to open it up and not put an upper age limit on the class. There are a number of people who are “college age” (18, 19, 20, and so on) who feel more comfortable being in a classroom with 15 to 18 year-olds as opposed to being in a classroom with people who are predominantly in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.  However, when a young adult feels ready, he or she is more than welcome to leave the Youth Bible Class and begin attending the Adult Bible Class.
